The Bosphorus is only about 700 metres across at its narrowest point, near Rumeli Hisarı — a gap slim enough to shout across, yet it divides Europe from Asia. That geography explains almost everything about the strait. For centuries it was the most contested waterway in the world, a 31-kilometre corridor linking the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and, beyond it, the Mediterranean. Whoever held the banks held the traffic. Mehmed II understood this in 1452. He raised Rumeli Hisarı on the European shore in four months, opposite the older Anadolu Hisarı, and closed the channel to Byzantine supply ships. Constantinople fell the following year. The Ottoman court later turned the same shoreline into a stage for leisure rather than war. Dolmabahçe Palace, completed in 1856, faces the water with a 600-metre facade and a marble sea gate built for arrival by boat. Beylerbeyi, Çırağan and Küçüksu followed. Currents run in two directions at once — a surface flow south from the Black Sea, a saltier undertow north — and captains work with them rather than against. Meanwhile the shoreline lights up in sequence: Maiden's Tower first, then Galata, then the minarets of the old peninsula. Turkish night entertainment, with its regional folk dances and Ottoman-era table music, moved onto these vessels in the late twentieth century, and the format has held.
